15 Tips to drive safe it low-visibility (reduced) conditions

Low-visibility conditions often occur and can be caused by dusk or hail, heavy snowfall, downpours, thick fog and blowing dust or smoke.

Here are 15 tips for driving in low visibility conditions:

1) Regularly exercise extreme caution – other drivers’ or pedestrians actions become very unpredictable.

2) Use low beams and fog lights, not high beams. Also the lamps and light at the rear registration plate must be switched on.

But remember: Additional fog lamps (of the vehicles) is allowed  to be used only at visibility greatly reduced (at a distance up to 50 m) due to fog, snow, rain or other similar conditions.

3) Slow down your speed, and avoid braking suddenly. Slow down carefully and gently.

4) Keep your view clear and always keep your windshield washer reservoir full – it will be used up very quickly if you run into ice fog.

5) Avoid fogged windows by regularly using the defroster and windshield wipers. Moisture can build up on the windshield both inside and out; air conditioning might help keep moisture from building up inside the cab.

6) Minimize distractions. Turn off the music and don’t talk on your phone. Try opening your window to help listen for traffic you might not be able to see.

7) Watch for emergency stops by other vehicles.

8) Watch for slow-moving and parked vehicles.

9) Use the right edge of the road, white fog line or roadside reflectors as a guide.

10) Do not overtake.

11) Do not change lanes or pass other vehicles unless necessary.

12) Never stop in the travel lanes. If you must stop for a stay on the roadway, outside populated areas, keep your beam lights and emergency lights switched on.

13) Never make an u-turn, especially in case of greatly reduced visibility (below 50 meters)

14) Do not tow another vehicle, especially in case of greatly reduced visibility (below 50 meters)

15) You must always be able to stop in half the distance you can see.

If the visibility is so poor that it would be unsafe to continue driving, do not try to continue to the next place of refuge (truck stop or rest area). Do not continue driving, find a safe place to get off the road immediately.
