From 1 April 2016, new toll system in Belgium for all vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
Starting from 1 April 2016, will introduce a new distance-based system for all vehicles with a permissible total weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
It will be a kilometer tax about 0,074 – 0,292 Euro per kilometer. The amount of the toll depends on the max. permissible weight and the emissions class of the domestic and foreign trucks.
All heavy trucks (including foreign trucks) will have to use On-Board Unit, which is route-dependent toll system. On-Board Units are available via the online portal of the toll provider and at point-of-sale terminals (POS), since 1st October 2015. The box deposit is 135 EUR per OBU.
The new system will be applied to the regions of Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels and will be valid on national highways and motorways which previously could have been payed with the eurovignette.
Right after registering for the toll and installing the On Board Unit in the vehicle, the user will be able to choose to pay before or after the journey. The data are transmitted via GSM technology to a management centre, where the invoices and payments are processed.
When the Belgian toll is active there is no need to pay for Eurovignettes, but in case driving through the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and/or Luxembourg, Eurovignettes is still necessary.
