Priority of right of way rules & unregulated intersection
All of us know about the Priority of right of way rules.
This is a right-of-way system, in which a driver of a vehicle is required to give way to vehicles approaching from the right at intersections. As the vehicle that is turning left must give a way to the opposite incoming vehicle.
But how this rule need to be applied in practice?
The rule applies to all intersections where it is not overridden by priority signs, street lighting or a traffic cop (uncontrolled intersections), including side roads and roundabouts. It doesn’t matter where the intersection situated (in populated area or outside populated area) or even regardless of the type of the junction ( T-shaped, circular or other).
IMPORTANT! If a railway crossing unregulated intersection, the priority of way is always belong to the tram, regardless of its location and its direction of movement!
Uncontrolled intersection
Unregulated (uncontrolled) intersection is an any intersection, which is not signalized by traffic lights, road signs about the priority of way, or there is no a traffic cop.
Here are a few examples of unregulated intersection:
1. An example of a T-shaped unregulated intersection – in this case there is no any traffic light of road signs about the priority of way. So, following the rules, the priority of way to cross the intersections belongs to the blue car, because it is located right side of the red car.
2.An example of a circular uncontrolled intersection – there is a road sing indicates only the direction for entering the roundabout, but there is no a road sign or traffic light about thepriority of entering the roundabout! So, following the rule the right of way has the yellow car, because it is located on the right side of the red car!
3.An example of typical unregullated intersection, in populated area – again there is no any road sings about the priority of crossing it of even traffic light. So, following the rule, the priority of way to cross the intersection belongs to you, because you are on the right side of the red car.
4.Typical unregulated intersection with a tram railway. Following the rule, the priority of way to cross the intersection belongs to the tram. After the tram, you may pass, because you are on the right side of the red car.
Priority of right of way rule have to be applied always an intersection of equivalent roads marked with a road sign A25 also. This road sign is used to indicate an intersections, where equivalent roads are crossing each other and is located outside a populated area. Equivalent roads means that there is no any road signs about the priority of way. So at junction signaled wi this road sign you always have to apply Priority of right of way rule!
5. An example of Tshaped intersection where equivalent roads are crossing each other, outside populated area, signalled with a road sign А25:
6.An example, in case the vehicles are oncomming each other. In this situation the priority of wa to cross the junction has the blue vehicle, because the red car is turning left….and following the rule it must give a way of the oncoming vehicles.
What is the right trajectory to cross the junction?
Turning left always begins from the most left lane in the direction of travel, and if the lanes are signaled about the direction of movement – the lane for the left turn have to be used.
When turning left to enter on the two-way road, the shortest trajectory as possible must be used. In this case the shortest path is marked with blue arrow.Turning right always begins from the most right lane in the direction of travel, and if the lanes are signaled about the direction of movement – the lane for the right turn have to be used.
When turning right to enter on the two-way road, the shortest trajectory as possible must be used.
IMPORTANT!
Priority of right of way rules must be applied in some cases related to regulated intersection crossing. Which exactly read here.
